Good evening my epic geeks,

In the hype of the amazing new game Pokémon GO, this week’s fandom Friday is of course, Pokémon. It doesn’t matter if you started two weeks ago with the release of Pokémon GO or twenty years ago with the original Pokémon. This Q&A is for every Pokémon lover of all sorts. Now let’s GO! (Yes, pun intended)

But before we get to the questions, please go check out A New Geek’s Perspective on Pokemon GO by Heather!

Fandom Friday Pokémon

What was your first Pokémon experience?

My first experience with Pokemon was the show and then when I was in Kindergarten and that was with the trading cards. I got my first card, which was a Mareep and I still have it! However, when I got extremely into Pokemon was more like first or second grade with the Gameboy games. I was such a hyper kid. I vividly remember bouncing around the bus seats (since a small school equals a very empty bus) somewhat freaking out as to why I was trapped in a box, aka the moving truck.

– Kayla (Epicfied)

Pokemon Go was actually my first REAL Pokemon experience *blush* I was exposed a little bit with cards in elementary school, but I never really got into it.

– Heather (Prima Geek)

Watching the anime! I was really young when it first premiered in the US, and I was immediately obsessed with it!

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

I honestly can’t remember it was such a long time ago. I started Pokemon at a young age.

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

Being in America on holiday – My boyfriend at the time (my now husband) started in Orlando and all the children were mad about the cards. Later we drove up North to see friends and they introduced us the the TV programme. About a month after we got home the crazy hit the UK and we became addicted to the TV show.

– Dee (Princess Deia)

I used to love the TV series in fact, I still do! I managed to pic up a few cards when I was young but it wasn’t until roughly 2006 when I had more and played the games (I know, I’m totally behind!)

– Nikki (Nikkipedia)

When I downloaded the Go game last weekend 😉

– Katy (Plays Well With Coffee)

I was ten or eleven and got a Gameboy for Christmas with Pokemon Blue, and that led to an obsession with the trading cards.

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

What was your first Pokémon game?

The first game I owned was FireRed for Gameboy Advance (actually, I had an SP, ohhhh, so cool) but I also went back and bought older games and of course collected newer games all the way up to Black. My friends and I would always trade games because we would make sure to buy different versions.

– Kayla (Epicfied)

Pokemon Go was my first Pokemon game.

– Heather (Prima Geek)

I actually didn’t start playing the video games until a few years back, so I’d have to say the trading card game:P

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

Pokemon Red (gameboy)….ya I’m pretty old. :/ I also LOVED Pokemon Snap

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

GO!

– Dee (Princess Deia)

The first game that I had was HeartGold, then I went back and got Pearl and now I own all the latest ones…Just waiting for Sun and Moon to be release now.

– Nikki (Nikkipedia)

Pokemon Yellow

– Jessica (The Nifty Nerd)

Pokemon Blue

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

Did you collect any cards? (if so, share your fave or most cherished here)

Yessss, I still have my binder of cards even though I no longer collect. My most cherished would be my first ever which has been owned by me for about fifteen years but I also highly adore my Flareon. If I have time, I’ll insert pictures here ->

– Kayla (Epicfied)

I’m pretty sure I had a squirtle back in the day. I like the cutesy ones.

– Heather (Prima Geek)

Heck yeah I did! I remember when I got my first holographic, Blastoise, and I treasured that thing. I rarely touched it from fear of getting it dirty!

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

I did collect the cards. I’m not sure which one was my favorite and I’m super bummed now that I threw them out when I was a teenager. Especially now that some of them are worth money. Gosh I was a stupid teenager!!

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

No.

– Dee (Princess Deia)

I do! Me and my fiance have many decks and booster packs. We also have both of the XY Breakthrough Elite Trainer Box with Mewtwo. The most cherished card we have is a holographic Ninetails. It was the first holographic we had in our first ever theme deck.

– Nikki (Nikkipedia)

Absolutely! I still have my collection too. I remember my parents got me a foil Blastoise for Christmas one year since it was the one card I needed to complete my collection.

– Jessica (The Nifty Nerd)

I did! I was always a big fan of Raichu

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

Okay, time to pick favorites… Favorite Eevee evolution?

Flareon is always my bae. <3 Flareon circle cute meme gif

– Kayla (Epicfied)

The Flareon Eevee seems pretty B-A.

– Heather (Prima Geek)

Of the originals, Vaporeon. I think the cutest is Espeon though!

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

Flareon (I’m pretty much saying that because it’s my most powerful pokemon on pokemon go at the moment).

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

Flareon (the Fire one)

– Dee (Princess Deia)

I like most Eevee evolutions but I’ve come to really love Sylveon! It’s the one I always have with me one the newer games.

– Nikki (Nikkipedia)

Boo! Haha, I kid. Not Joleteon. How’s that (and I’m only considering the original 3 from the 1st 151)

– Jessica (The Nifty Nerd)

I currently have a Flareon but (I googled) I think my favorite would be Galceon.

– Katy (Plays Well With Coffee)

Vaporeon

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

Red (or FireRed), Green (or GrassGreen), or blue? (or are you special with Yellow?)

I was a FireRed kid, but if I chose it would be Blue! I never had Yellow though. ):

– Kayla (Epicfied)

Haha, I’m one of the special Yellows, I guess. I loved getting to start off with Pikachu!

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

I’m guessing Red because I played pokemon red??

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

It wasn’t my own, but I loved playing my fiances version of Yellow.

– Nikki (Nikkipedia)

Yep, I’m special with Yellow!

– Jessica (The Nifty Nerd)

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

Do you have Pokémon GO? If so, what level are you?

Currently, I am writing this at 6:55pm on the 21st… I am level 15… that being said, I think it is pretty obvious I have Pokemon GO. I started a day late though. ):

– Kayla (Epicfied)

I do! I’m currently a level 9. #behindthecurve

– Heather (Prima Geek)

Of course I do, and I’m level 14! I like to think I’d be a higher level if the game wasn’t constantly crashing.

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

YES! LVL 14

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

8

– Dee (Princess Deia)

I do have go but I’m only just about to go to level 5. I’ve been having trouble with my data plan so I took it off my tariff. I’m only playing by wifi at home at the moment.

– Nikki (Nikkipedia)

Since day 1. Sadly, adult responsibilities have only allowed me to progress to level 18. 😉

– Jessica (The Nifty Nerd)

8!

– Katy (Plays Well With Coffee)

Lvl 14

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

Share your favorite Pokémon (doesn’t matter if it’s your highest, proudest, cutest, whatever)

My current favorite has to be my Flareon but that’s just because I just evolved her yesterday. Yes, the “Pyro” nickname worked… and yes, her name is now Ginny after Ginny Weasley…and yes my Jolteon’s name is Tonks and my Vaporeon will be Luna.

– Kayla (Epicfied)

I’m pretty into my Eevee’s. I also am quite fond of my OG Squirtle. I’ve affectionately named him Squish. I dig him.

– Heather (Prima Geek)

I haven’t caught my favorite Pokémon yet, sadly. All I really want is a Psyduck!

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

I would say my Meowth and my Squirtle…I actually had to hunt those two down. Usually randomly walk up to pokemon but those two I set out to find them (once they appeared in my nearby)

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

Jiggly puff- although I am yet to catch her. Of the ones I own, my Carmander as I loved him in the TV show (esp. When he evolved).

– Dee (Princess Deia)

Pikachu has always been my favourite Pokemon but I don’t have it yet. My favourite that I have is my Eevee. It’s the cutest and my highest so far.

Nikkipedia Eevee

– Nikki (Nikkipedia)

Favorite in general or Pokemon Go? I’m guessing the latter given that’s the section of questions I’m on. We’ll go with Hypno cause his Psychic ability just rocks gyms.

– Jessica (The Nifty Nerd)

Flareon & Vulpix!

– Katy (Plays Well With Coffee)

Current favorite is my Vaporeon; she’s awesome! And my highest haha.

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

Valor (red), Mystic (blue), or Instinct (yellow)?

I’m Mystic. No hate if you’re not. I love you all.

– Kayla (Epicfied)

Valor all the way!

– Heather (Prima Geek)

Instinct all the way! Though it does feel like most people see us this way:

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

Team MYSTIC!!!

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

Valor

– Dee (Princess Deia)

Valor all the way!

– Jessica (The Nifty Nerd)

#TeamMystic!

– Katy (Plays Well With Coffee)

GO TEAM VALOR!

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

Why did you choose your team?

I chose Mystic because I over-analyze everything. I’m a lover for sure but I think about everything I do wherever I am. My plans and actions are usually calculated and I love being informed. I just thought it was the route to go for myself.

Team Mystic Pokemon GO

– Kayla (Epicfied)

I chose my team because I like the ideal behind nurturing your Pokemon to reach their highest potential. The lover in me wants to give them all a hug.

– Heather (Prima Geek)

I think I just liked Spark best, haha! Seems like a cool dude.

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

When I read the description for team MysticI thought they sounded cool. I like the idea of learning from the wisdom of the pokemon. Mystic sounds like the Ravenclaws out of the three teams.  I got lucky that most of my friends are mystic (so now we can team up and get gyms).

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

Sadly, because my husband and I agreed to be on the same team and he picked Valor first.

– Dee (Princess Deia)

My friends, husband, and I decided to go red so we could raid and level gyms together.

– Jessica (The Nifty Nerd)

Because – Blue – but also because the evolution part is pretty cool.

– Katy (Plays Well With Coffee)

Honestly, one of my daughter’s fave colors is red so I knew she’d love it. My partner also wanted Valor, and I was pretty indifferent so red it was!

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

Is Pokémon GO making you more active?

Absolutely. I love walks already and it gives me something to do on them. I feel really awkward standing on my phone when I go on walks but it keeps me more calm and now it’s an excuse. Not to mention, it’s helping me explore areas I never knew about. Instead of just going in the same areas, I’m finding new landmarks that I didn’t know existed! It is definitely helping me hit my step goal!

– Kayla (Epicfied)

Absolutely! My whole family has gotten into Pokemon GO. We all go out after dinner and do about 2 miles walking just to catch our Pokemon for the day.

– Heather (Prima Geek)

Definitely, my husband and I have spent a lot of time at parks and Downtown Disney trying to catch ’em all!

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

DEFINITELY. The first week of having it, I found myself going on walks during my lunch break. Even when hanging out with my friends, we actually went on a walk to find pokemon.

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

Not really, although we did leave the house on Monday night because someone had set of three lures in our local park and we were hoping to catch a rarer Pokemon. – we caught a Nidoran (male)

– Dee (Princess Deia)

Not at the moment due to my data issues, but I am hoping that it will when it comes to it. I’m looking forward to having more walks with my fiance.

– Nikki (Nikkipedia)

Nope. My husband and I are active all on our -we love to hike!

– Jessica (The Nifty Nerd)

Not really, but mostly because I joined Crossfit right before I downloaded it, so That’s sucking all the activeness out of me for the week hahaha.

– Katy (Plays Well With Coffee)

I don’t think it’s made me more active, but I do take longer walks with my kiddo now as she loves hunting down Pokemon.

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

What is ONE tip you want to share with all of the readers?

Everyone loves the curveball but I actually really hate it… but, the smaller the circle you get it in, the more exp you get! A really small circle is really hard but is like 500exp! Good luck!

(Also, the whole “Click the pokeball to get it back is a myth, it just grabs a new one quicker. Just saying.)

– Kayla (Epicfied)

Don’t be afraid to use your Razz Berries! And also, don’t be that guy who’s standing in the middle of the road catching a Pokemon. That Charizard is not worth your life!

– Heather (Prima Geek)

Some people might not know this yet, but you get bonus XP for throwing a curveball when catching a Pokémon. Just spin the ball before throwing, but make sure you compensate for the curve!

– Ashlee (Her Geekery)

Seriously, watch your surroundings. I work in the city and there was a news report last night that someone was robbed while playing Pokemon Go. You should always be aware of who/what is around you. Maybe don’t go down a dark alley to capture a virtual pokemon. Also, don’t trespass aka break the law in order to capture a pokemon. It’s just not worth breaking the law of a virtual pokemon.

– Nicolle (Geeky Nikki)

Remember it’s just a game!

– Dee (Princess Deia)

Stay safe and go catch ’em all!!

– Nikki (Nikkipedia)

Less of a tip: Remember the 3 teams are rivals, not enemies…remember what happened in Pokemon 2000 when the 3 legendary birds warred….have fun and be nice to your fellow trainers. Also, save all you evolves for when you pop a lucky egg. Especially all those Eevees, Pigeys, and Rattatta.

– Jessica (The Nifty Nerd)

Don’t forget to power up your pokeball by spinning it before you throw!

– Katy (Plays Well With Coffee)

Enjoy it, but don’t obsess over it. Though that’s basically my advice for all games.

– Kayly (My Open Sketchbook)

Thank you all so much for the amazing answers (and such a great outcome)! I love seeing all of the different perspectives from different countries too because not only has the release for Pokemon GO effected us, but also our childhood. I didn’t even think about the fact that the show release in the US would be different than the UK etc. I knew it was different than Japan but didn’t think about elsewhere.

So thank you and again don’t forget to check out all of these lovely blogs out (all links down below and behind their names). and all of the previous Fandom Friday Q&As (linked in the beginning of the post)!
